Tory Burch set up such a captivating tale in her program notes at her Tuesday morning show. It’s all about a nice, prim girl, under the spell of the wrong kind of guy. The notes say, “She’s innocent, unaware of her own sex appeal,” and the setting is in a hotel where they meet.

Polished, proper looks with, said Burch, “subversive undertones,” are just a tiny touch askew making them all the more interesting. Fitted silhouettes, nipped waists, snug knits and loads of leather pieces peppered the collection. A boucle skirt with a thick hem of beaded embellishment transforms an almost preppy embroidered tweed jacket with a turtleneck sweater. The sweetness of a chiffon ruffle blouse is balanced by a sexy fitted leather peplum jacket.

The proportion -- cropped -- of a suede and shearling jacket gave it edge and a conservative little necktie on a blouse was amped up with a handful of sequins. Plaids, hand painted rather than fabric, were eye-catching and metallic thread ran through many a humble sweater.

The clothes were great. The guy, not so much.
