On a 14-acre compound one finds a luxurious, eight-room country inn, a casual restaurant called The Barn, a bakery and a yoga studio and The Farmhouse at Bedford Post, a destination dining experience well worth a drive.
Its claim to fame is that in 2007, the ramshackle property was resuscitated by the actor Richard Gere, his wife, Carey Lowell, and friends, who said they wanted a place to ride their horses. The restaurant occupies the ground floor of a magnificently restored 18th-century farmhouse. While elegant, it is not stuffy, with three seating options: the snug trio of formal rooms, a 70-seat main dining room and a rustic tavern. Downstairs is a spectacular, hand-crafted wine cellar that can be rented for private events.
The refined food is unfussy and bold. At these prices, it takes nerve to send out spaghetti with tomato sauce — but what tomatoes they are, especially in summer. Cool-weather dishes might include cod in lobster broth with potatoes, lamb shank with chickpeas, dates and pomegranates, and whole-roasted branzino with herb vinaigrette. Servers are pleasant and know their stuff. -Bryan Miller
