Why visit the Dia:Beacon? The soaring white spaces and 34,000 square feet of skylights in this converted Nabisco box factory make it a liberating first stop in the quaint, arty town of Beacon. Dia:Beacon offers 30 galleries of some very large contemporary art, from the colorful scrap-metal sculptures of John Chamberlain to the massive steel monuments of Richard Serra. The museum's bookstore is a trove for contemporary art enthusiasts; grab a bite in the adjoining airy cafe or stroll the formal gardens outside, just above the Hudson River. -Pat Wiedenkeller
