Grammy nominations: Which Hudson Valley stars will be nominated?

Their careers are demanding, but Beyonce and Jay-Z are taking a moment to bask in the joy of becoming new parents. “We are happy to announce the arrival of our beautiful daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, born on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012,” the couple said, confirming the news in a joint statement. “Her birth was emotional and extremely peaceful – we are in heaven.” The statement added, “She was delivered naturally at a healthy 7 pounds.” (Jan. 9, 2012)

“Grammy Nominations Concert LIVE!,” a televised special co-hosted by LL Cool J and Taylor Swift that will announce the nominees in the awards’ major categories, airs tonight at 10 on CBS.

Although no local music stars are likely to pick up Grammy nods for the top four awards – Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Best New Artist – it’s highly possible that Hudson Valley talent will be nominated in one or more than 70 other categories.

Here’s a look at the Hudson Valley musicians (and one comedian) who might earn a 2013 Grammy nomination based on the award eligibility period from Oct. 1, 2011, to Sept. 30, 2012.

LIKELY NOMINEES

Beyonce and Jay-Z: The supercouple and Scarsdale homeowners both released singles from their 2011 albums that are eligible for Grammy nominations this year.

Beyonce is the third-most honored female artist in Grammy history, having won 16 awards and received a staggering 43 nominations. Given how much the Grammys love to nominate her, Beyonce seems like a shoo-in to get nods for the singles “Countdown” or “Love on Top.”

Two tracks from “Watch the Throne,” Jay-Z’s collaborations with Kanye West, have the potential to receive nods as well.

Mary J. Blige: The Yonkers native has had some financial problems as of late, but considering the fact that she has won nine Grammys and been nominated 29 times, that shouldn’t prevent Blige from getting Grammy love for her latest album,“My Life II, The Journey Continues (Act 1).”

Dave Matthews Band: The Grammys also seem to be fans of the popular rock band fronted by lead singer Dave Matthews, who spent part of his childhood in Yorktown: DMB has received one award and 14 nominations, including a 2010 nod for Album of the Year. The group’s latest album “Away From the World,” has the potential to earn nods in the pop and rock categories.

Matchbox Twenty: “North” was Matchbox Twenty’s first-ever No. 1 album, and the band, led by lead singer and Bedford resident Rob Thomas, seems likely to receive Grammy love for its latest effort.

Jimmy Fallon: The former Saugerties resident released “Blow Your Pants Off” this summer, a compilation of popular musical numbers from his late-night talk show. Considering Fallon’s popularity, it’s hard to imagine that “Pants” won’t get a nomination for Best Comedy Album.

Taylor Swift: After her brief, whirlwind romance with Bedford’s Conor Kennedy, we consider the country star an honorary local. Swift seems poised to earn a couple of nominations for her hit single “We Will Never Ever Get Back Together,” including Record and/or Song of the Year.

POSSIBLE NOMINEES

Aerosmith: The legendary rock group fronted by Yonkers native Steven Tyler released its latest album, “Music From Another Dimension,” too late for award consideration. But the band did release three singles including “Legendary Child” before the cutoff date, so it might have a chance for a Grammy nod or two.

Matisyahu: The former White Plains resident has received only one Grammy nomination in his career, but his critically acclaimed album “Spark Seeker” could earn him at least one more.

Beach Boys: The iconic pop group, whose current incarnation includes North Salem resident David Marks, released “That’s Why God Made The Radio” to mark its 50th anniversary. It seems possible that the Beach Boys will receive Grammy nominations as a nod to nostalgia and their impact on music history.

Pete Seeger: The folk artist released two albums this year –“A More Perfect Union” and “Pete Remembers Woody” – which could nab the Fishkill resident recognition in the Americana Roots categories.

Rufus Wainwright: The Rhinebeck native, who also attended school in Millbrook, is eligible for Grammy consideration for his latest effort, the critically lauded “Out of the Game.”

Loudon Wainwright III: Rufus’ father, who was raised in Bedford, also could earn Grammy nods for his most recent album, “Older Than My Old Man Now.”

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards will air Feb. 10, 2013.
