Area residents won’t have to travel far to visit one of the world’s top tourist destinations. National Geographic Traveler magazine has named the Hudson Valley one of the best places in the world to visit in 2013.

According to the magazine's editors, the Hudson Valley merited inclusion on the list of top 20 must-see places because of its rich artistic and cultural history, starting with Pete Seeger’s Clearwater Festival, which will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2013. The Hudson River School Art Trail and Storm King Art Center in New Windsor also are cited as ideal destinations for art lovers.

The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park and Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills are also mentioned as places that stoke “locavore passions.”

The Hudson Valley is one of four U.S. travel spots on the magazine's list, along with the banks of the Missouri River in central Montana, St. Augustine in Florida and Memphis, Tenn.

It isn’t the first time the region has been noted as a top travel destination. Earlier in 2012,  the Hudson Valley was ranked second on Lonely Planet’s list of the top 10 U.S. travel destinations for 2012.
