The world waited Wednesday to see who would emerge as the new head of the Catholic Church. Among the curious were celebrities who have called the Hudson Valley home and took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

In chronological order, here are some of the most interesting tweets from Wednesday's big reveal.

As white smoke began to billow from the Vatican's chimney, signaling to the world that a new pope has been chosen, it caught the attention of former Yankees catcher John Flaherty, who grew up in West Nyack.

National Lampoon contributor Evan Kessler, who grew up in Pomona, seemed to know this blog post was coming.

Larchmont native Joan Rivers had a hunch that turned out to be correct.

Tarrytown native Keith Olbermann, who'd just settled his skirmish with Current, was having a little fun with the name game.

Comedian and former Peekskill resident Michael Ian Black was empowered by new knowledge.

Nyack resident Rosie O'Donnell, who weeks earlier tweeted her own suggestion for the new pope, saw this papal exhibition as one big reality show.

It was then that Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires, emerged on a Vatican balcony and assumed the name Francis to lead the church. The announcement excited celebrity chef Mario Batali, who owns Tarry Lodge Restaurant in Port Chester.
