Francesca Andre
The sunny, herbaceous cuisine of Provence is brilliantly presented here in one of the most romantic settings in the region. On the way to the dining room you pass through a lavish herb and flower garden, entering a 19th-century home done in soft yellow and wood, and embellished with antique furniture and bucolic paintings. The owner, Jacques Loupiac, is welcoming and vigilant, as is the entire staff.
On the regular menu are items like baked escargot with garlic custard and hazelnuts, glazed lobster casoulette with Swiss chard and sauce américaine (a tomato-based sauce of olive oil, onions and tomato), and veal chop with pommes soufflés and tomato fondue. A good deal is the $32 prix fixe lunch; at dinner, it is $82. -Bryan Miller
