Type: American, Historical landmarks Special features: Live music, Weekend brunch Description:

With weathered plank floors, beamed ceilings and cozy nooks, this Revolutionary War-era tavern is something to see if you're a history buff, if only for a drink. It has National Landmark status due to the important role it played in the American Revolution, serving as a prison for Benedict Arnold's collaborator, Major John Andre, who was confined there before his execution.

The dining areas each have original fireplaces, two fronted with carved wood and the other covered in Dutch tiles. The menu is mostly traditional American, with dishes like Yankee pot roast, crabcakes and roast duck with black cherry Cumberland sauce.  -Bryan Miller
