Incumbent state Sen. Steve Saland is the likely winner of his party's nomination after the latest absentee ballot counts gave him a near-insurmountable lead Friday, GOP officials said.

For Saland, a win would temporarily silence critics within his own party, who vowed to unseat him for joining New York Democrats by voting to legalize same-sex marriage in New York in 2011.
