From bumper cars to splitting atoms
Consolidated Edison announces the purchase of a 260-acre tract in Buchanan that once held the Indian Point Amusement Park, with the idea of building a nuclear power plant. By Sept. 16, 1962, the first power plant, named Indian Point 1, would begin generating electricity. By 1970, Con Edison would be fined $1.6 million for killing fish in the Hudson River by discharging hot water. The state would charge the utility with serious violations of conservation regulations.
