A Spring Valley fire that left more than 50 people homeless likely began with a candle left burning on an apartment floor near some bedding, the Spring Valley Fire Department said Thursday.

The three-alarm blaze prompted a response from at least six local fire departments, who battled flames for several hours Wednesday at the Raymond Castle apartments at 500 East Funston Rd.
