CONCORD, NC - MAY 23: (L-R) Former President and General Manager of Charlotte Howard 'Humpy' Wheeler, speaks with Mark Martin, driver of the #55 Aaron's Dream Machine Toyota, on the grid during qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 23, 2013 in Concord, North Carolina.
being a little kid in the stands, I used to watch him a lot. I remember the first time I went to Madison speedway, there was an ASA race, and there was Trickle, Mark Martin, Ted Musgrave, Bobby Dotter; you wouldn't believe all the people that were in that race, Alan Kulwicki.
I’m kind of a low-key guy, but, man, I don’t know … I can only imagine what it felt like back in 1988 when Mark Martin got that first win for Jack Roush or when Geoff Bodine won that first race for Hendrick Motorsports ... I’m sure it was just as special. A lot of these guys have been to victory lane in the Sprint Cup Series and late model racing, short tracks, ARCA – all kinds of series – but to do it here at Talladega in 2013, like I said, it’s a true David vs. Goliath story. I couldn’t be more proud to play my own role.
That's what made the [Nationwide] Series so strong ... It gave guys like Bobby Labonte, Jeff Burton, Jeff Gordon and myself the opportunity to go racing against those veteran guys like Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Sr. 10 times a year. I outran them a couple of times.More quotes »
