IP2 goes live
A test is successful for Indian Point 2, whose planned construction in 1965 was hailed by Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller as a move of major importance to New York state and its expanding atomic industry. A year later, the reactor would officially go online, after repairs to the steel liner inside the reinforced concrete dome that prevents radiation from leaking out. A third reactor that Con Edison gained permission to build in 1969 and was still under construction would be sold to the New York Power Authority in 1973 to help the financially strapped utility.
