The New York State Public Service Commission is setting a Feb. 1 deadline for Con Edison and the New York Power Authority, which runs the state's power grid, to prepare contingency plans for the possible shutdown of the Indian Point nuclear power plant.

In a statement, Con Edison said it would comply with the directive, but warned that alternative generating sources need to be in place.
