Crackling thunder and heavy rain swept into the Hudson Valley on Wednesday evening leaving thousands without power as the vanguard of a storm system walloping the region with rain, hail and isolated flooding -- and expected to break the heat.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Ulster and Dutchess counties through 9 p.m.
